Seven-time continental champions AC Milan missed the chance to book their spot in the last 32 of the Europa League on Friday (NZ Time), while Everton were knocked out on matchday four of the competition.
Milan travelled to AEK Athens in group D but were held to a 0-all draw which leaves them top of the pile on eight points, two ahead of the Greeks.
Austria Vienna won 4-1 at Rijeka to reach four, with their hosts last on three.
Another Serie A side, Atalanta, also fell short of knockout phase as Josip Ilicic's penalty was cancelled by Apollon Limassol's last-gasp 1-1 equaliser through Emilio Jose Zelaya.
0 through Bertrand Traore, Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay to be share the group lead with Atalanta and eliminate the Toffees.
Apollon, five points behind, have only a small chance to progress.
Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off late on for Everton as caretaker manager David Unsworth saw his record slump to three losses in three.
In group B, leaders Dynamo Kiev secured progress with a 1-0 win at Young Boys while Partizan Belgrade beat Skenderbeu 2-0 to be best placed behind the Ukrainians.
Ludogorets were held 1-1 by Braga but still top group C on eight, one better than the Portuguese.
Hoffenheim led through Florian Grillitsch at Istanbul Basaksehir but Edin Visca levelled deep into injury time to leave the sides on four and two points respectively.
Maccabi Tel Aviv were knocked out in group A with 1-0 home defeat to Astana while Villarreal won 2-0 at Slavia Prague. The Spaniards top the table but both Astana and Slavia can still catch them.
Group F meanwhile is incredibly tight with Copenhagen, 3-0 over Zlin, and Sheriff, 2-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow, leading on six points each. Lokomotiv have five and Zlin two with everyone still hopeful of qualifying.
