Bayern Munich has supporters everywhere as the recent Deutsche Welle documentary, “The Mia san Mia Phenomenon — FC Bayern, an international success story” showed in high-definition detail.
Bayern competes on a global scale with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and now, Paris St-Germain. Those clubs, some funded by über rich Middle Eastern owners and American and Russian billionaires, make it necessary for Bayern to look for revenue outside Germany.
Bayern has begun to make its mark in the United States, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times, which looked at the growing numbers behind the club’s expanding reach. The number of official fan clubs has grown from eight to 129 in 38 states, and figures complied by Nielsen show the team’s digital audience at 27 million.
The results of an unscientific online survey released by the club Tuesday, showed Bayern has supporters in all 50 states and 43 percent of the respondents are younger than 25, and 18 percent are female.
Self-identified Bayern supporters said they follow the team because the roster includes a favorite player, they like the team’s style of play or they were attracted by the club’s success domestic and European success. A third of respondents said they have been fans for at least five seasons, and more than half (51 percent) said they did not grow up playing soccer.
Fans of the club were asked how many hours per week they spent following Bayern platforms including television, online and social media: 60 percent answered between one and four hours, and almost a quarter (23 percent) said they devote five or more hours to following the team. FOX Sports broadcasts every Bundesliga match across both television and digital platforms in the U.S.
Nearly half of the respondents (48 percent) said they also support local soccer teams in addition to Bayern.
