Jose Mourinho could well decide to play Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford together when forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back fighting fit and ready to start games again.
At the minute, it seems to be the case of one or the other with Romelu Lukaku then leading the line as the number nine, but given how different Lukaku and Zlatan are, things may change when the legendary forward is back.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say:
“They can play together, but Mourinho rarely needs both of them at the same time.
When United dominate possession, Mourinho prefers to use someone like Juan Mata or Henrikh Mkhitaryan who can pick apart a defence with intricate passes.
United do often rely on fast forwards when they play on the counter-attack – as they did against Spurs on Saturday – but, when the speedy Romelu Lukaku is leading their attack, just one of Rashford or Martial provide more than enough additional pace.
Later in the season when Mourinho has the luxury of resting Lukaku for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the manager might decide to compensate for the Swede’s relative slowness by unleashing Martial and Rashford together.”
Martial
At the minute, Mourinho seems to favour starting Rashford and then allowing Martial to come on and often score – as was the case against Tottenham Hotspur, where it worked to brilliant effect, with Martial scoring the winner.
The defensive work done by Rashford seems to be the reason Mourinho favours starting him, and then putting on Martial as a super sub, where he has been effective this season – yet the Frenchman made it clear that after the Spurs game, he does want to be starting but knows that Rashford is also a top class player.
After the game, he said: “I want to play, I don’t want to be on the bench but Rashford played well too so the manager tries to give us a chance.”
