Arsenal travel to the Premier League leaders at the weekend needing a win to reduce the nine point gap between them in the table.
There is added intrigue with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez likely to start against the team he wanted to join in the transfer window.
Arsenal stood firm for much of the summer in their determination to keep hold of Sanchez, who has refused to sign a new contract.
But they finally relented and were ready to sell Sanchez if they could get a replacement before the deadline.
Sterling and Sergio Aguero were rumoured as possible makeweights in a swap deal but the transfer eventually collapsed with City reportedly left furious.
Wenger insisted Sanchez will have no issues with focus for the game but when asked if there was any truth in rumours linking Sterling with the Emirates, the Arsenal boss was coy.
Wenger said: “I don't want to open any speculations on that before a game like that.
“I believe that the transfer window is closed at the moment so that is not really a subject that is very important.”
Last month, Sterling claimed he did not “think one minute” about Arsenal’s possible interest.
He said: “I didn’t have any negative thoughts. I just woke up one day with England, didn’t believe a word of it.
“I didn’t need to worry about it – didn’t think about it one minute.”
