Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that it was a “massive risk” for him to have played Dele Alli against Real Madrid last week due to a hamstring injury he had sustained just days earlier.
Alli, 21, was absent in Spurs’ win against Crystal Palace on Sunday but is very likely to be back in the frame against Arsenal after the international break as he has now withdrawn from the England squad to play Germany and Brazil.
The midfielder scored two goals in Spurs’ historic 3-1 victory over Real Madrid at Wembley last Wednesday, showing no signs of a hamstring injury he had picked up in the loss at Manchester United.
Pochettino is now looking towards that North London derby clash with Arsenal in just under two weeks’ time, but had admitted that he was playing a dangerous game in fielding the England international in the Champions League.
Dele Alli against Manchester United finished the game feeling his posterior tendon, close to the hamstring, and then played 90 minutes against Real Madrid,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the London Evening Standard.
“It’s a very, very, very small thing. It was a massive risk (to play him) again. We’re sure he’ll be ready for Arsenal (after the international break). We hope he’s going well in the next few weeks and will be available.”
As it stands, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris and Harry Winks have been sidelined by injuries in the past week as well as Alli, who have joined Victor Wanyama and Erik Lamela in the treatment room.
Lamela is expected to make a comeback from a hip injury after the international after spending a year out while there has been no return date confirmed for Wanyama as of yet.
